How to Check If Your PC Can Run a Game Before You Buy It
Learn how to quickly and accurately check if your PC can run a specific game without guessing, downloading third-party tools, or relying on confusing spec sheets.
We've all been there: a massive Steam sale drops, a game you've wanted for months is finally 50% off, but you hesitate. You're just not sure if your aging PC or daily-driver laptop can actually handle it.
Buying a game only to find out it runs at a choppy 15 frames per second is incredibly frustrating, and the refund process is a hassle you want to avoid. The good news is that you don't need a degree in computer science to figure out if your hardware is up to the task.
Here is exactly how to check if your PC can run a game, step-by-step, without installing any bloatware or relying on confusing guesswork.
Step 1: Find Your PC's Exact Specifications
Before you can compare your PC to a game's requirements, you need to know exactly what you are working with. You only need three pieces of information: your CPU (Processor), your GPU (Graphics Card), and your RAM (Memory).
You don't need to install any software to find this. Windows has everything built-in.
Finding Your CPU and RAM

Recommended Requirements
This is the hardware the developers suggest for a "good" experience. This usually means playing at 1080p or 1440p resolution on High settings at a smooth 60 frames per second.
Always aim for the Recommended requirements if possible. Minimum requirements often lead to an incredibly compromised experience.
Step 3: Compare Your Hardware (The Easy Way)
This is where people get confused. If a game asks for an "Intel Core i5-8400" and you have an "Intel Core i3-12100", can you run it? (Spoiler: Yes, the newer i3 is actually faster than the older i5).
Hardware naming conventions are a mess. To make comparing simple, use benchmark comparison sites.
How to Compare CPUs and GPUs
I recommend using PassMark (cpubenchmark.net or videocardbenchmark.net) or simply searching YouTube (which we will cover in a moment).
If you want a rough but quick comparison:
- Search Google for
[Your CPU Name] vs [Required CPU Name]. - Look for results from reputable review sites or comparison tools like UserBenchmark (though take their exact percentages with a grain of salt, they are fine for broad "is this better or worse" checks).
- Repeat the process for your GPU:
[Your GPU Name] vs [Required GPU Name].
The RAM and Storage Check
These are simple numbers:
- If the game asks for 8GB of RAM and you have 16GB, you pass.
- If the game asks for 50GB of storage space, ensure you have at least 50GB free on your drive (ideally an SSD, as modern games struggle on old mechanical HDDs).
Step 4: The Ultimate Test — Search YouTube
This is the best-kept secret in PC gaming. The absolute most reliable way to know how a game will run on your PC is to watch someone else play it on identical hardware.
There are thousands of YouTube channels dedicated entirely to benchmarking games on different hardware configurations.
How to do it:
- Open YouTube.
- Search for:
[Name of Game] [Your GPU] [Your CPU].- Example: "Cyberpunk 2077 RTX 3060 Ryzen 5 3600"
- Example: "Hogwarts Legacy Intel Iris Xe 16GB RAM"
You will almost certainly find a video of someone playing the exact game you want, using the exact hardware you have. The video will show you the exact settings they used and the frame rate they achieved.
This eliminates all guesswork. You can see with your own eyes if the game looks smooth and playable or if it's a stuttering mess.
What About "Can You Run It" Websites?
You've probably seen websites like System Requirements Lab (commonly known as "Can You Run It").
While these tools are popular, I do not recommend them for two reasons:
- They require you to download and run a small piece of detection software on your PC. While generally safe, downloading random executables isn't a great habit.
- They are overly literal. They only look at the exact names of the hardware. If a game requires an older high-end card, and you have a newer mid-range card that is technically faster, the tool will often give you a "Fail" simply because the names don't match its database.
Doing the manual check outlined above takes only a few minutes more and gives you a much more accurate answer.
Summary Checklist Before You Buy
Before you hit the purchase button on that sale, run through this quick checklist:
- Do you have enough RAM? (e.g., Game wants 16GB, you have 16GB).
- Do you have enough free storage space, ideally on an SSD?
- Is your GPU roughly equal to or better than the Minimum (or preferably Recommended) requirements?
