The RTX 4070 uses a PCIe 4.0 x16 interface. That's it. The motherboard chipset dictates how many USB ports you have, how many M.2 drives you can plug in, and whether you can overclock your CPU. It does not bottleneck your graphics card.

If you have a limited budget, every dollar you waste on a motherboard feature you'll never use is a dollar you should have spent on a better GPU, more storage, or a quieter cooler.

Z790 vs B760: Stop Wasting Money

Don't buy a Z790 board just because it's the "high-end" option. Use this logic instead:

Buy a Z790 board if:

  • You bought an unlocked Intel "K" CPU (like the i5-13600K or i7-14700K) and you actually plan to manually overclock it.
  • You absolutely need 4 or 5 fast NVMe M.2 slots for massive storage arrays.

Buy a B760 board if:

  • You bought a locked CPU (like the i5-13400F or i7-14700F) which can't be overclocked anyway.
  • You have a "K" series CPU but have zero interest in spending your weekend tweaking voltages in the BIOS.
  • 3 M.2 slots is enough storage for you.

ASUS TUF Gaming B760-Plus WiFi D4

This board is at the top of my list for one specific reason: it uses DDR4 RAM. If you are upgrading an older PC and already have a good 32GB kit of DDR4 memory, you can drop it straight into this board. Saving $100 by not buying DDR5 RAM makes this a massive value win.

The power delivery (VRM) is a solid 12+1 phase design that easily handles a Core i7 without overheating. You get three M.2 slots, WiFi 6, and 2.5G ethernet. It's an understated, matte black board that just works. Best for: People carrying over DDR4 RAM from an older build.

MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk WiFi

If you are building entirely from scratch and want to jump onto the newer DDR5 platform, the Tomahawk is the gold standard for mid-range boards.

MSI somehow crammed a 16+1+1 phase VRM onto a B760 board, which is complete overkill but means it runs incredibly cool even with an i9 processor. It has four M.2 slots (very rare at this price), meaning you have plenty of room to add more storage later. It also includes WiFi 6E, which is great if you live in a dense apartment building where the 2.4 and 5GHz bands are hopelessly congested. Best for: Standard DDR5 builds where you want room to expand your storage.

Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX

If you bought an i7-13700K or 14700K and you want to push it to its limits, this is where I'd spend the extra money. The VRM cooling on this board is massive — thick aluminum blocks that can soak up the heat from heavy CPU overclocking.

It features five M.2 slots, and crucially, one of them is PCIe 5.0. Gen 5 NVMe drives are mostly a gimmick for gamers right now, but if you want to keep this motherboard for five years, it's nice to have the option when prices drop. Best for: Overclockers and future-proofers who need Z790 features.

ASRock B760 Pro RS

ASRock is the king of budget boards. The Pro RS gives you four M.2 slots and totally adequate power delivery for an incredibly low price (often undercutting the Tomahawk by $30 or more).

The catch? No built-in WiFi. If you plug your desktop into the router with an ethernet cable like a civilized gamer, you don't care. If you need WiFi, you'll have to buy a separate PCIe WiFi card, at which point you should just buy the Tomahawk. Best for: Wired ethernet users on a strict budget.

Do You Need a PCIe 5.0 Slot for the RTX 4070?

No. The RTX 4070 is a PCIe 4.0 card. If you plug it into a motherboard with a PCIe 5.0 slot, it just runs at PCIe 4.0 speeds. It makes absolutely zero difference to the performance of the card today.

The only reason to care about PCIe 5.0 is if you plan to keep the motherboard for your next GPU upgrade in 4 or 5 years, when the RTX 6000 or 7000 series might actually have enough raw power to saturate a PCIe 4.0 connection.

Wi-Fi 6 vs 6E: Does it Matter?

Standard Wi-Fi 6 runs on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It's fast and fine for most houses. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band. Because it's newer, very few of your neighbors are using it. If you live in an apartment complex where 30 different routers are fighting over the 5 GHz spectrum, 6E is a lifesaver for gaming latency. (Note: Your router also needs to support 6E to use this).

The Final Call

Stop overthinking the motherboard. Pick the one that fits your RAM (DDR4 vs DDR5), has enough M.2 slots for your storage plans, and has WiFi if you need it. Put the money you save toward a 1440p monitor that actually lets you see what that RTX 4070 can do.
