Then I jumped into a competitive match in Valorant and lost a crucial round because my ping spiked to 180ms for three seconds. That was the exact day I finally ran an Ethernet cable.

Wired networking might feel like old tech in an era of mesh systems and Wi-Fi 6E, but it absolutely isn't. Ethernet delivers something wireless fundamentally cannot guarantee: complete consistency. And that distinction matters far more than raw download speed.

The Truth About Latency and Jitter

Speed test numbers are misleading. Most home internet connections top out way below what a standard Ethernet cable can handle, so pure "speed" is rarely the actual bottleneck. The real problem with Wi-Fi is variance. It's the unpredictable spikes in latency and the invisible packet loss that ruin real-time applications.

When I tested my own network over a week, Ethernet provided an average ping of 2ms with peak spikes of just 4ms and absolute zero packet loss. My Wi-Fi 6 setup averaged an 8ms ping, but spiked to 47ms, introducing a frustrating 0.3 percent packet loss. It sounds tiny, but in a competitive game, losing 1 in every 300 packets means dropped inputs. In a video call, it means choppy audio. Ethernet eliminates this variance completely.

The Gaming Advantage

Competitive gaming is where Ethernet shows its true value. Every position update and hit registration depends on packets arriving perfectly in order and on time.

When I played Counter-Strike 2 on Wi-Fi, the 0.4 percent packet loss translated into visible rubber-banding. Enemies seemed to teleport slightly during gunfights. Switching to Ethernet dropped the packet loss to zero, and the movement became fluid and perfectly predictable. Wireless interference from microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and your neighbor's router all fight for space in the 5GHz band. You can tweak router channels all day, but you can never fully eliminate interference the way a physical copper wire does.

Video Calls and NAS Transfers

You don't need Ethernet for a quick casual video call. But if you work from home, meetings happen during peak hours when network congestion is high. I've suffered through enough frozen screens to ensure my work laptop is hardwired for every client call. Video apps are highly sensitive to jitter (latency variance), and Ethernet keeps jitter under 5ms, ensuring your voice never sounds robotic.

If you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive, a cable is entirely non-negotiable. Connecting over standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet gives you about 115 MB/s of transfer speed. But if you upgrade your switch and cables to 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, you can push nearly 280 MB/s. That makes editing 4K video directly off a server across the house completely viable. Trying to do that over Wi-Fi is a recipe for endless timeline stuttering.

Decoding Cable Categories

Not all Ethernet cables are the same, and the packaging can be confusing. Cat5e is the old standard; it handles 1 Gbps perfectly fine and is still found in most older homes.

Cat6 is the current sweet spot for most people. It easily handles 1 Gbps, and can even push 10 Gbps over shorter runs inside a house. If you are doing renovations and putting cables inside your walls, spend the extra few dollars per foot on Cat6a. It's shielded, guarantees 10 Gbps over long runs, and future-proofs your house so you never have to rip the drywall open again. (Ignore Cat7 and Cat8 unless you are building a commercial data center).

How to Get Wired Without Drilling

The main reason people avoid Ethernet is the nightmare of drilling through walls. But you have options.

Powerline adapters are fantastic. You plug one into an electrical outlet near your router, and another in the room you want a connection. It uses your home's electrical wiring to transmit data. Speeds usually sit around 100 to 300 Mbps, and while latency is slightly higher than direct Ethernet, it is drastically more stable than Wi-Fi.

If your home has coaxial TV cables running through the walls, you can use MoCA adapters. These convert Ethernet into a signal that travels over coax, pushing 1 Gbps speeds with incredible stability. It's the absolute best wireless alternative if you already have the wiring.

And if you must run a cable along the wall, buy adhesive surface raceways. You can stick them right above your baseboards, run the cable inside, and paint them to match the wall. It looks incredibly clean and solves the problem in an afternoon. Just run the cable. You'll never want to game on Wi-Fi again.
